Carrying the world ('s culture) on one's shoulders
Walking down some of my favorite city streets (think Paris, London, Rome, NYC) I find myself involuntarily eyeing well-dressed men, but not for the reason you might think. As a stitcher with a passion for fit, I am obsessed with shoulders. And men's suits are the gold standard for shoulder-studiers like me.
Well-made British shoulders are typically snug and adorned by a lovely ridge at the top of the sleeve, not puffy and not gathered, but a formal little hump, before the sleeve shoots straight down, King's Guard style, to the top thumb knuckle. French shoulders are a tad easier, without the pomp and circumstance of that little bump. Instead they quietly convey an understated je ne sais quoi. Perhaps that has something to do with the Revolution. Italians famously love the exaggerated shoulder look. It says, "Attento!" you're in my duchie now.
